Za’atar is actually both a plant and a dried spice blend. The za’atar plant is a wild variety of thyme. It looks similar to thyme, the plant grows throughout the Middle East, North Africa, Greece, and Turkey.

Za’atar has been part of Middle Eastern culture for thousands of years and has been used for everything from food and medicine to perfume.
