Toitū te Tiriti Day of Activation painting, 30 May 2024

This work was made at Vunilagi Vou as a fast and intuitive one-day painting inspired by the Toitū Te Tiriti nationwide activati0n on 30 May 2024. The Toitū Te Tiriti movement and solidarity for this vital and urgent kaupapa inspired a powerful reflection on the ground stone of the structural violence we are bearing witness to in 2024. Initially devised as a protest sign, the process of painting over the day focused energies, enabled clarity and calmed the mounting frustrations felt for the current coalition government.

Painted on loose calico with acrylic paint, the work was later finished with trims, details and canvas hanging tabs.

These words are chosen intentionally; they carry an appropriate weight. The very intentional use of language, that can often inspire discomfort, has been particularly inspired by the leadership demonstrated by Te Pāti Māori.
